I can’t believe it is almost here. One more day until my favorite college event of the year, the Alpha Delta Pi annual Kickball Tournament benefiting Ronald McDonald House Charities of Austin and Central Texas (RMHC Austin).
For those of you who don’t know me, I have been an intern with Missy Strittmatter for special events at RMHC Austin for almost one year now. My involvement with RMHC Austin all began when I joined the first and finest sorority, Alpha Delta Pi (ADPi) at The University of Texas at Austin (UT).
As you probably can tell by my internship position, I love participating in and promoting events for a great cause, and today I would like to take a second to share with you some information about ADPi’s largest fundraiser of the year benefiting RMHC Austin.
Every year, over 30 teams from the UT community gather at Haven’s Fields in Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park to battle it out for a chance to win amazing prizes. Teams create fun, unique team names and dress accordingly. Last year, my team, “The BallStarz” went for the intimidation factor by wearing all black including war paint on our faces.
Unfortunately, the intimidation factor did not land us in the finals. However, we kept up our team spirit and had an absolute blast with all of the other amazing fun activities the tournament had to offer including delicious BBQ from PoK-E-Jo’s, a moon bounce, and a DJ to “wobble” to!
While kickball is a lot of fun and games, the true meaning behind the event is to raise awareness and funds to support families served by RMHC Austin. Over the past three years through kickball tournaments and other fundraisers, ADPi successfully raised more than $50,000 to donate Room 25 at The Ronald McDonald House. Additionally, ADPi was fortunate enough to refurbish and provide a unique, comfortable, home-like room for families to stay in when their children are in an Austin area hospital as part of this year’s Room Refresh project.
Spearheaded by RMHC Austin volunteer and ADPi kickball chair, Nikki Ellis, this year’s event is bringing some new activities and fundraising efforts into the mix. For just $10 a person, participants will get to enjoy catering by Chick Fil A, snow cones, free tanks, an inflatable slide and wonderful music by Deejay Chet. Additionally a raffle will be held to encourage more donations. For $5, participants will enter in a chance to win free Whataburger for one year. With a $1 raffle ticket, participants have a chance of winning gift cards to Hyde Park Bar and Grill, Torchy’s Tacos, Plucker’s, Shady Grove, and Tiff’s Treats.
Unfortunately, registration is closed for the kickball tournament, but you can still help ADPi. Our goal this year is to raise $30,000 to put towards a room in one of the three Family Rooms supported by RMHC Austin. We are so close at $28,000. If you would like to help us reach this goal, you can make a donation at texasadpi.com. Together we can help children heal!
