When doctors in Trinidad were unable to successfully treat 14-year-old Thalia Khan’s seizures, they referred the family to Dell Children’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. The family had expected to stay in a hotel when they arrived in Austin, but the engaged social workers at Dell Children’s assured them that there was a room for them at the Ronald McDonald House.

The Khan family sent a letter to the editor of the Austin American-Statesman expressing their thanks – to Dell Children’s, to the Ronald McDonald House and to the giving Austin community. Note the special thanks to all of you who prepare meals for families staying at the House.

Thank you, Austin

I would like to express my gratitude to all the people we met during our recent visit to Austin when our daughter Thalia was undergoing tests at Dell Children’s Medical Center. Our special thanks to the caring and compassionate doctors, support staff and all at the EMU department. The entire staff of the Ronald McDonald House whose actions relieved us of our worries and burdens made our stay comfortable and pleasurable. I would also like to mention the people of Austin who gave their valuable time to prepare meals; You will be forever in our thoughts. The selflessness and generosity you have shown to strangers should not go unrecognized. Thank you and may God continue to shower his blessings on all concerned.

The Dell Children’s epilepsy program is attracting kids from all over the nation and other countries. With the completion of the third bed tower built by our good friends at Beck, set to open this spring, Dell Children’s will have more resources to treat more kids.

The Ronald McDonald House is here for all of these families seeking care in the Dell Children’s epilepsy program, as well as all families with children in Austin hospitals, just as we have always been. We are grateful to be here to help families access this important medical care in Austin.

As many families do, the Khan family expressed special thanks to those who cooked meals at the House while they were here. Have you prepared a meal for families at the Ronald McDonald House? What do you remember most about that experience?
