We’re looking for about 30 good people to be volunteers at our newest Ronald McDonald Family Room! This Family Room will be at St. David’s Medical Center on 32nd St. and we are very excited about its opening at the end of June.
My involvement with RMHC Austin began as a volunteer at our first Family Room at St. David’s Women’s Center of Texas when it first opened, and it was a great experience. So our Family Rooms are definitely near and dear to my heart. We opened our second Family Room at Dell Children’s Medical Center last September, and it also has been a great success.
The Family Rooms are located next to the neo-natal ICUs at each hospital and provide a place for the families of those children to take a break from the hospital atmosphere for a while, to relax a little and recharge so they can be refreshed when they return to their child’s bedside.
Volunteers staff the Rooms and provide the most comfortable and relaxing environment possible. This means a lot to the families who use those services, but they tell their own stories best. The Alter family graciously told about their experience; watch it here.
And when Ryder Turner spent 60 days in the NICU, his family was able to make use of the NAMC Family Room. “Just steps away from the NICU and the endless beeping monitors was a place where my husband, four-year-old son, Cael, and I could escape,” said Rachael Turner. “We can be a family together here, at least for a few minutes.”
That’s what it’s all about – keeping families together and helping children heal.
