I really really really want to yarn bomb something, anything, here at the Ronald McDonald House.
Yes, you read that correctly, yarn bomb. And though you may very well be wondering what the heck I’m talking about, if you have driven through the North Lamar underpass (just north of Lady Bird Lake), you have seen some yarns bombs, courtesy of Austin’s own world-famous yarn bombers of KnittaPlease, whose founder Magda Sayeg is considered the founder of the movement.
Or perhaps you saw the installation at the Blanton Museum last spring. If you drive on Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., it would have been difficult to miss. A crew of knitters and crocheters bombed 99 trees!
Yarn bombing, yarn storming, guerrilla knitting – the movement goes by many names and its products can range in size from a wristlet on a statue to a yarn-bombed bus in Mexico City. From subtle to outrageous, by sanction or stealth, it’s just plain fun. When I first noticed the Lamar Blvd. installation while stuck in traffic it did put a smile on my face!
But back to Ronald. Day after day, he loyally sits at the bench at our front door, greeting families staying at the house, volunteers coming to make a meal or help in the office, through rain, sleet, and snow… and record heat, of course.
With any luck, cooler weather will eventually arrive here in Austin, so don’t you think he might need something to keep him warm, like cozy sweater? Some yarn bombers even cover whole statues. Or perhaps we could wrap the bench itself in yarn.
Indeed, the Ronald McDonald House is such a warm and welcoming place, I can’t help but see yarn bombing opportunities everywhere. The playground, the RMHC blocks out front, the more I look around, the harder it is to resist.
Given our role as a home away from home for our families, I think a knitted or crocheted surprise here and there would add to the atmosphere!
Alas, I don’t know how to bomb yarn just yet. But I am looking forward to learning. I’ve just signed up for a community project with a well-known charity…but it’s top secret for now, so you’ll just have wait to hear more about that!
